The Kenosha Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies say it is too dangerous to try to keep searching Lake Michigan for a missing 17-year-old.
He jumped off the North Pier on Thursday and now his fellow classmates at Indian Trail High School in Kenosha are learning it is a recovery effort.
"He was about to graduate and continue on with his life so it's sad," said senior Jordan Sweet.
"My teacher was actually crying in class today," said senior Chloe Masi.
Students say other left class at Indian Trail High School. Rescue crews were forced to stop the search around 4 p.m. Friday because of the waves and currents.
"The conditions for the lake have actually deteriorated since this morning. So it's getting very difficult to even operate out there in a boat," said Kenosha Fire Department Division Chief Ryan McNeely.
The high school senior jumped off North Pier with a friend to take a picture for the yearbook.
"I know it says like, 'Don't jump' and everything but a lot of people jump off it. It was kind of like a streak when we were freshmen," said Sweet.
A family member who did not want to be identified said the teen jumped into Lake Michigan once, but the picture didn't turn out. When he jumped a second time, the friend he was with was struggling to make it back so he swam to help and went under.
"You never think it will happen so close but it's honestly crazy to think about," said senior Destiney Ramon.
The Kenosha Fire Department said they will not be searching again. Now they will just wait to make a recovery.
